Double standards

Jarred the wyrd-worker on Christian Ex-Witches:
“Here's the thing that gets me about Christian ex-witches. A lot of Christians just accept whatever they say about witchcraft as if being "an ex-witch" makes them an expert on the topic.
And yet, they'll insist that former Christians like myself "were never real Christians" and "never understood the faith" and dismiss everything we say.
The double standard is obscene. Note this applies to Christian ex-atheists, Christian ex-Muslims, and just about any Christian who wants to tell you all about "the truth" about their former "lifestyle."

Reply from taking off the tinfoil hat:
Oh excellent point. They love some confirmation bias. And it's been exploited and amplified by satanic panic grifters like Mike Warnke.

This is so true, and I hadn’t thought about it before. Christians (especially fundamentalists and evangelicals) are often badly misinformed about witchcraft and Pagan and polytheist religions. As a result they will often believe whatever confirms their existing biases.

They tend to read “analyses” of Paganism and witchcraft written by Christians, which are usually wildly inaccurate.

Occasionally one meets a well-informed Christian who has read the work of Ronald Hutton or other serious scholars.

I have also noticed that Muslims are frequently well informed about Paganism, and even if they’re not, it is usually possible to have a sensible conversation about it with them.

Credulous journalists (who are often very ignorant about matters of religion) will also publish any old nonsense from people claiming to be ex-witches, because they are happy to sell newspapers with sensationalist trash.
