Movies and TV

Changing Paths challenge day 27: movies and TV.

Movies and TV that changed my mind / blew my mind.

1. Robin of Sherwood. Puck of Pook’s Hill was the book that made me a Pagan, but this was the TV series that clinched it. Herne the Hunter in the woods. The peace of Beltane 🥹 Also, 14-year-old me had a huge crush on Michael Praed.

2. The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I saw it first as a stage show. Nonetheless it convinced me of the joy and sacredness of being queer and sexually liberated.

3. Gandhi. The realization that millions of people are not Christians and never will be helped me realize that the evangelical Christian worldview is shite.

4. Breakfast Club. It caused me to try polyamory. While I’m not polyamorous, I have many friends who are.

5. Pride. Actually it was the real events that inspired this movie that were among the things that made me a leftie, rather than the movie itself, but I wanted to include the movie anyway because it is a great movie.

6. The Emerald Forest. Confirmed my view that Indigenous life-ways are important and meaningful. The script was written by Rob Holdstock, author of Mythago Wood.

Sure, some of these movies are probably seen as problematic nowadays because the white person is the main character or Gandhi is played by a white actor or there just isn’t any representation of Black people — but they were groundbreaking in their day and they made me think.
