Debunking clobber verses

Websites that unpack and de-fang religious beliefs about same-sex love and gender nonconformity come and go. I occasionally still meet people who think that all churches are homophobic, or that Christianity and homosexuality just aren’t compatible. And there are always new exvangelicals emerging blinking into the light of day and deconstructing the toxic beliefs that were foisted upon them.

So it is great to see a new series of essays from Father Nathan Monk on Facebook:

Today is the last day of Pride Month. Every Sunday during Pride, I published a special edition of Unholy Sh+t to help folks have tools in their tool chest to combat some of the key talking points used against the LGBTQ+ community by Biblical literalists.

This series has been a real labor of love. There are six essays in total, each with a unique focus.

Below, you’ll find the complete list of essays for you to enjoy. You are welcome to use any part of these as you need. I hope that they help you find healing, hope, and maybe a hammer to help whack away at some of the mistranslations and misconceptions about what the [Christian] scriptures say about homosexuality.

I hope that you had a lovely and beautiful Pride Month full of queer joy 🌈❤️

For more of this sort of thing, check out the chapters on religion and sexuality and religion and gender in my book, Changing Paths.

I also recommend the Jesus in Love blog by my friend Kittredge Cherry, who is a minister with the Metropolitan Community Church, founded by and for LGBTQIA people.

If you’re looking for queer-friendly churches, check out the Gay Church website. Special mention goes to the Quakers (welcoming gay people since 1966) and Unitarian Universalists (welcoming gay people since 1970).

The excellent website, Would Jesus Discriminate? is still available via the Wayback Machine.

For a list of queer-affirming religions and denominations, check out the Human Rights Campaign website where there’s a list of different religions’ attitudes toward same-sex love and gender nonconformity.

For Wicca, there’s the inclusive Wicca website (maintained by me) and it has links to inclusive polytheists and inclusive Heathens too. Most Druids tend to be LGBTQIA-inclusive so there isn’t a need for a distinct inclusive subgroup.
